Regulatory Assistance

Complying with Government regulation is a part of doing business in today's world. You must be sure to thoroughly investigate any laws and regulations that apply to your business.

The Governor's Office of Regulatory Reform (GORR) helps new and expanding businesses with New York State permit and licensing requirements. The staff of skilled permit coordinators, backed by a permit information database, can give you comprehensive information on all State permits and licenses.

The Small Business Ombudsman Program is available to New York State small businesses and the Program:

  • Provides general business assistance;
  • Helps businesses cut government red tape at all levels of government;
  • Provides problem-solving assistance on a variety of issues such as
    • obtaining a business license,
    • getting paid for a government contract, resolving business tax problems, and
    • working with specific government agencies.

You may file your trademark or service mark with the New York State Secretary of State

The New York State Department of Labor's Division of Safety and Health protects workers in their work environment with such services to employers as on site consultations to determine if a company is in compliance with federal and state laws and regulations.

New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation's (EFC) mission is to promote environmental quality by providing low cost capital and expert technical assistance to municipalities, businesses and State agencies for environmental projects in New York State. EFC has Small Business Assistance Programs to help business comply with state and federal air emission requirements.

Empire State Development's Environmental Services Unit can help businesses identify and transform environmental concerns into market opportunities and competitive advantages. The Environmental Investment Program invests in projects that result in pollution prevention, reuse or recycling. The Small Business Environmental Ombudsman Program provides businesses with free and confidential assistance in understanding and complying with air quality regulations.

To help New York State's small businesses achieve a clean, healthy environment for employees and their families the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and Empire State Development (ESD) have organized the New York State Environmental Assistance Network (NYSEAN). Refer to the ENVIRONMENTAL section for further information.

The U.S. Department of Justice oversees the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The ADA is a Federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in everyday activities.

The U.S. Small Business Administration Office of Advocacy's Federal Regulatory Alerts  web page provides one-stop access to proposed regulations, the ability to submit comments on the proposal, direct access to Advocacy staff, and links to other regulatory related sites.

BusinessLaw.gov is an online resource guide designed to provide legal and regulatory information to America's small businesses.
