Small Business Advisory Board

Established under Article 4-B, Section 133 of the Economic Development Law, the New York State Small Business Advisory Board consists of 15 members appointed by the Governor and legislature, nine of which must be individuals currently involved or have extensive experience in the ownership and/or operation of a small business. Board members serve for a term of three years and meet on a quarterly basis. The Board has the power and duty to advise the Governor, legislature and Commissioner of Economic Development concerning: legislation necessary to foster and promote the prosperity, expansion and development of small business concerns within the state; existing laws, rules, regulations and practices of state agencies which are counter-productive to the prosperity, expansion and development of small business concerns within the state; the development of inter-governmental cooperation among agencies of the federal, state and local government and cooperation between private industry and government so as to assure the optimum development of small business concerns. The Board serves as a catalyst for creating and maintaining a small business consciousness in the state and also administers the annual New York State Small Business Awards. The awards are presented annually by the Governor to outstanding small businesses, not-for-profit organizations and members of the small-business community throughout New York State.
